Lyrics to Each of my EP's Songs

4/24/2018

Someone asked me to put all of my lyrics in one place on the internet so they can be easily found. Your wish is granted.

Arrows Lyrics
There are arrows painted on the street and above each lane,
Telling me that I can only go a certain way.
My turn signal flashes even though I’m the only one at the light,
And I wonder where I’d go if I went left, when all signs point right.

And all the arrows
Of the intersection
I make no
I make no objection
‘Cause I follow
I always follow directions

I follow the car in front and I never defy the boss,
‘Cause I don’t want to be alone and I’m scared of getting lost.
I’ll sit down and listen, make do with what I’m given,
But I don’t want to grow old, always having done as I’m told.
I stay on my side, where I know that I am safe,
But I’m dying for a turn to misbehave.
(oh, oh, oh, oh)

And all the arrows
Of the intersection
I make no
I make no objection
‘Cause I follow
I always follow directions

I settle for less, blindly follow the GPS,
The voice, and the screen, that dictate where I am going.

And all the arrows
Of the intersection
I make no objections, I always follow directions.
I hate the arrows
Of the intersection
‘Bout time to make objections,
I’m sick of following directions.
I hate the arrows, I hate the arrows.
(I hate ‘em I hate ‘em)
I hate the arrows, I hate the arrows.
I hate the arrows, I hate the arrows.

Bigger Than You Lyrics
Another bombshell from your hand
Hit the ground in my land
I cover my head
From all the hate that you spread
Wipe the tears on my shirt
And it’s so hard, because I’m hurt
But I say, I say,
That it’s ok, ‘cause I’m ok.
And at the end, at the end of the day

I’m so much bigger than you
And I do what you could never do
And I see what you could never see
‘Cause you are smaller than me
You know good people, they don’t treat other people
Like that

You got your blade on my neck
Today you write my paycheck
But in one short year
I’ll be gone, outta here
You must notice that I’m tall
That must be why you try to make me feel small
But in this place, you will stay
When I am gone, far away
And at the end, oh at the end of the day
I’m so much bigger than you
And I do what you could never do
And I see what you could never see
‘Cause you are smaller than me
You know good people, they don’t treat other people
Like that

You are a rain cloud of mine
But I am pure sunshine
And I am here, even if you
Don’t let me shine through
And all the hate that you spread
I’ll evaporate instead
‘Cause at the end, oh at the end of the day

I’m so much bigger than you
And I do what you could never do
I lift other people up
And I am more than enough
And what you cannot see
Is of your opinion I am free
Even if you were the same size as me
And you know good people, they don’t treat other people
Good people, they don’t treat other people
Like that

No Lyrics
No, I don’t come here often
No, I don’t care what you’re offerin’
Don’t, oh don’t, oh don’t you dare
Do you not understand my get back glare?
Tell ‘em no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
Tell ‘em no, no, no, no, no, no, no

Tell ‘em no, I’m not on the market no more
Yet I turn heads when I walk in the door
I am not impressed by your looks or your wealth
Kindly keep your hands to yourself
Tell ‘em no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
Tell ‘em no, no, no, no, no, no, no

Tell ‘em don’t touch my waist when you walk past me
You are not entitled to anything and
No, I didn’t dress up for you
I’m a noun, not a verb, not something you can do
Tell ‘em no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
Tell ‘em no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Tell ‘em no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
Tell ‘em no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Tell ‘em no.

Good Again Lyrics
You finally shut your eyes, rolled to the side, you’re sleeping
And I envy you, I wish I could too, I just wanna feel good again
And I’m tempted to wake you up, search for external peace
But that’s not what I should do, that’s not what’s good for me
Been laying here with my eyes, with my eyes open
And I just want to feel good again

I wanna hopscotch down the hallway
Wanna run away from here
I wanna hop on a bike and go so far that no one knows where
I might be or what I’m doing
Almost like I disappeared
She always hated when I did that
But it’s what I do when I get scared
That I’ll never feel good again.

Give me an estimate, in the ballpark, help me make a decision
See the longer that you stare into the dark, you get better vision
Self-incriminating and painful thoughts, they gather best at four a. m.
And I don’t want to wake you up, but I wanna feel good again

I wanna hopscotch down the hallway
Wanna run away from here
I wanna hop on a bike and go so far that no one knows where
I might be or what I’m doing
Almost like I disappeared
She always hated when I did that
But it’s what I do when I get scared
That I’ll never feel good again.

I think of everyone that’s ever slept in this room and what they’re doing
Or if any of them have pets
It’s five in the morning
My train of thought doesn’t have to make sense
And I got my headphones in and I’m staring at the ceiling
And I wonder if I’ll ever sleep or feel good again

‘Til I hopscotch down the hallway
‘Til I run away from here
I wanna hop on a bike and go so far that no one knows where
I might be or what I’m doing
Almost like I disappeared
She always hated when I did that
But it’s what I do when I get scared
That I’ll never feel good again.
You finally shut your eyes, rolled to the side, you’re sleeping

Understand You Lyrics
Red heels, black dress
The picture sits close to your mattress
In a hand painted picture frame that I made
Shiny shoes, suit jacket
I’ve seen how you stare at it
I will never understand you

The room’s dark, the blinds pulled
If you weren’t holding me I’d be cold
Your face is soft, you’re clutching my palm
The sound of your breath keeps me calm
And if I, I woke you
You wouldn’t sleep again until I did, too
I will never understand you

Red candles and golf tees
I like how you collect things
All your ducks are in a row
And over there on that chair you folded my clothes
I will never understand you

‘Cause I lose track and I drop things
Never been on time for anything
But you said, in this very bed
“Time isn’t real, you silly head”
I will never understand you

And over there in that locked box
There’s bullets, poetry, and some pretty rocks
My birthday is the combo to the lock
You make my hands calm
You make my stomach unknot

And in the window I love the dawn breaks
This apartment is my favorite place
‘Cause you never make me question
While I struggle with these expressions
But you organize my chaos
You love me like my mom does
I will never understand you

I hope I never understand you.

The Perks of Being "Not Quite Right"

2/21/2018

Have you ever felt a little off? Like you don't fit in? Like your mind works a little different than others' around you?

Have you ever felt a little alone? A little strange? A little "too" something?

I talk a little too loud. I cry a little too often. I see things around me that others don't. I get lost in my mind.

Hell, I'm always a little lost.

And that is exactly why I'm an incredible writer.

Has there ever been a super hero who didn't have some adversity, or who didn't have some struggles or tendencies that lead them directly to their power?

Those things that make you different and weird and off are probably what make you an artist, or someone who can see the beauty in art.

Well, let me be the first to tell you, creating art is a super power.

ARROWS. THIS SPRING.

10/26/2017

Picture
I’m excited to announce the name of my upcoming EP/short album. Arrows will be out everywhere late winter/early spring of 2018. This EP will be 100% DIY. Each song is written, produced, recorded, and mastered by myself. Independent artist takes on a whole new meaning as I write and play every instrument on the album, distribute it myself, and promote it myself (eek!).

The album name is inspired by my favorite song I’ve ever written, one of the tracks of the album. The song “Arrows” is about being someone that always does as they are told, makes decisions based on other people, and follows directions. Someone who hates that about themselves, who really struggles with stepping out of line and doing what it is that they really want to do.

I wrote this song in 2013. It’s still relevant in my life today.

"Arrows" is about wanting to go places and do things you’ve never had the courage to do before. Arrows is about doing what you’re passionate about, not what you "should" do.

“ ’Bout time to make objections, I’m sick of following directions ”

Every song on the EP ties into the theme of this lyric in some way, and I can’t wait for you to hear each and every one.

Studio Time

7/18/2017

It's really fun creating an album completely by yourself when you know nothing. NOT.

Every dollar I make performing gets fed right back into recording. I'm doing everything myself. My studio is in my bedroom. My book shelf is filled with recording and music industry books. Learning to record music is my project just as much as my album is.

I am learning more and more every day. I'm excited to announce I just finished mixing and my mastering my first song! Guess how long it took me from start to finish...

60 HOURS. WHAT.

Yup...this stuff takes a ton of time. To be fair, it was a more complex song (Rain, if you've seen me live) where some of that time was spent writing drums, figuring out software issues, creating midi tracks, etc. With any luck, the next tracks will take half the time per song.

It's a frustrating, long process. But I'm in it for the long haul. I'm not quitting until my story is told. If it took a hundred years it would be worth it.

I can't wait for you to hear the words I've written down.

Twinsburg's Rock the Park

7/18/2017

Wow! Twinsburg's Rock the Park was such a fun venue!!! I had an awesome time opening for Post Road, a country cover band in Cleveland. My portion of the show was an hour long, and I played for over 1,000 audience members! It was exhilarating. Everyone was drinking, dancing, and singing along. I couldn't believe how loud that crowd cheered out after my renditions of "Royals," "Country Roads," and an original called "Afraid of the Water."

My favorite part of the show was coming down into the stands and seeing the fans afterwards. So many people, friends and strangers, came up to me to tell me what they loved most and request pictures. It was such an animated crowd and I absolutely loved playing for you all. Thanks to all who came! And of course, congrats to Post Road for an awesome show.

Excited to announce I am currently working on my first real album! It will be completely DIY and homemade by myself. This stuff has a huge learning curve... but it's worth every second I put in. I've read, watched, listened, and learned so much to get to where I am.

I just finished (finally) tracking the sick guitar in "In Cursive." I can't wait to get the vocals in and play with the percussion.

What songs do you hope end up on my album? There's room for 10. What do you want to make the cut?

A Show (and shop) to Remember

1/31/2017

Donkey Coffee will always be my favorite venue and will at all times have my heart.

I had such a fantastic time playing this past weekend. I've never seen the place so packed. Via an instagram contest, I gave away a free, handmade guitar string bracelet (which I hope to make more of). My loop pedal and my originals were absolute hits. The crowd laughed, smiled, sang, and cheered. They sure did make me feel like a star. Check out videos and more pictures from the night on my facebook page, Brenna Lynn Music.

On stage, I was my typical silly, awkward, smiley self... but something felt different this time. I looked out at the crowd - some people sitting on the floor because they ran out of chairs - under the string lights at the humble coffee shop showroom. And I realized I might never get invited to play an invite Saturday night show at Donkey again since I'm graduating.

Donkey is easily my favorite place in Athens. It's got the greatest open mic in town, it's got fun, quirky, and sometimes even pretty deep art. It's the most environmentally friendly coffee shop I've ever been in. It's got the friendly staff that draws things in your latte. It's got eclectic music and people. It's all fair trade and local. It's got the most delicious hot chocolate, coffee, and chai tea lattes. And of course it has Troy - he used to be the sound guy there - and he is quite potentially one of the kindest, purest, gentlest, most beautiful souls I've ever met. I miss Troy.

Donkey has made me feel like a star, it's made me feel cozy when the whole world has felt cold, it's introduced me to beautiful local musicians, it's warmed my soul with lattes and friendliness, it's made me write and read poetry on stage, it's gotten me through finals week, and it will forever be my favorite coffee shop.

My last song of the night was "You Are My Sunshine," and everyone in the shop sang and clapped along. It was quite beautiful, hearing all of the people sing along in the little venue that is my sunshine.

Thank you Donkey Coffee for all you've done for me.

Forever,
Brenna Lynn

Music City, USA

OH. MY. GOODNESS.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of taking a super quick trip to Nashville. I needed to visit the graduate school down there, Vanderbilt University, so Brandon and I booked a hotel – using points so that it was only about 50 bucks for two nights believe it or not – and took the 6.5 hour drive from Athens to Music City.

Well…I see why they call it music city!

On Broadway Avenue, aka “Music Row” it’s impossible to not hear music. On every street corner, every floor of every bar, and every balcony and rooftop, there is live music. Bands everywhere!

Brandon told me, “Brenna, I know you love tipping musicians, but you’re not gonna be able to tip them all.” We settled on tipping only the street performers with low-tech equipment and first rate performances, figuring they needed and deserved it the most. One fiddler in cowboy boots had me dancing in seconds, so she won my tip.

We danced and sang all night long at each bar! My favorite bar was probably Honky Tonk Central, because of the balconies on the upper floors. We got some great craft beer and split a pizza at a delicious place called Rock Bottom, which I highly suggest.

I absolutely loved being surrounded by music and couldn’t help but daydream about being up on the stages. I dream and pray that I will get into Vanderbilt University, and maybe even get my tuition paid for with scholarships, so that I can move to Nashville and put all of my free time towards music. If not, I’ll get my Master’s up in Ohio, and move to Music City as soon as I get my cap and gown.

Until next time Nashville…

Xoxo

Copyrights.

1/14/2017

I don't know about you, but my art is sort of my life. My songs are my mind on paper...and if someone else ever claimed or profited off of my songs without my permission, it would be like they stole part of who I am.

Last night I just couldn't sleep, so around 2am I figured as long as I'm up, I might as well do something important. Copyrights.

So how do you copyright your creative material?

Technically, you own the copyright as soon as you put an idea into a tangible, reproducible form. So when you create a painting, take a picture, or scribble words on a napkin, it is YOUR copyrighted material.
However...
It's hard to prove that you truly created something before someone else did (especially in court) unless it's registered through the U.S. copyright office.

Some people say that you can do a "poor man's copyright" by mailing yourself a copy of your work and not opening it. I am the QUEEN of poor man's mcgyver-y methods....but this is one process that is WORTH EVERY CENT. A poor man's copyright holds up very poorly in court.

To copyright a song,
it costs $35, or $55 for a collection of songs, so it makes more sense to do a load of songs at a time. Start by going to www.copyright.gov and go to the eCO office to register a copyright online. Once you get to the eCO site, create an account and login. Click "register a copyright" on the left hand side and answer the questions (yes or no) by checking the boxes. Since I wrote my songs and did all of the creative work myself, I answered "yes" on the last two questions, but because I was copyrighting a collection of songs, I clicked "no" for the first question.

This brings you to the standard application (where you want to be when copyrighting an album rather than a single). From there, begin answering all of the questions and filling out your information. When it asks for a title, name the album, not the individual songs (you'll upload those later). I just called mine "Brenna's Songs 2016" since that's when they were recorded.

After answering all of the questions, enter your payment information. After you officially pay the copyright office, you can begin submitting songs! I copyrighted 13 songs this time around...and it felt so good.

Now that I know my creative material is safe (aka if someone used it illegally I could properly fight, sue, and/or correct the problem), I am excited to put more of my work out there! Get excited for some cool YouTube videos and downloadable songs on the horizon!!

I hope all of my fellow artists that read this benefit from this post. If you'd like a video of me copyrighting material and explaining the process, please request one below in the comments section!

Best $55 I ever spent.

Love,
An artist-loving songwriter

New Years Resolution

1/7/2017

Picture
Ok 2017. Listen up. This year I'm not joking around.

2016 was a year of performances: I had a lot of practice playing out at places like Donkey Coffee, The Symposium, The Smiling Skull, Gillespie's Map Room and more. It was a lot of fun and brought me some income to put towards more musical equipment.

But 2017 needs to be more.

2017 will be the year I get down to business and record an album. I'm not positive it will be released this year, but I know it will be in the works, and I'm going to work my tail off on it.

My album and my music will be my main priority this year.

I, Brenna Lynn Innocenzi, hereby vow to spend AT LEAST 2 hours on recording an album each week. I PROMISE to at least record and release one song before the end of the year.

That being said...enter the fans! What songs should I put on my album? What songs have you been dying to listen to at home? I have room for 10 songs and it's going to be tricky making decisions on which songs should take priority and get a slot on this album.

STAY TUNED. This year I hope to have polls, prizes, votes, freebies, questions, contests, and artwork submissions for this album. I promise I will not disappoint. Tell your friends.

I'm coming for you 2017.
